Zero-Day Alert: Three Critical Ivanti CSA Vulnerabilities Actively Exploited

Zero-Day Alert: Three Critical Ivanti CSA Vulnerabilities Actively Exploited

Oct 08, 2024 Zero-Day / Vulnerability
Ivanti has warned that three new security vulnerabilities impacting its Cloud Service Appliance (CSA) have come under active exploitation in the wild. The zero-day flaws are being weaponized in conjunction with another flaw in CSA that the company patched last month, the Utah-based software services provider said. Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow an authenticated attacker with admin privileges to bypass restrictions, run arbitrary SQL statements, or obtain remote code execution. "We are aware of a limited number of customers running CSA 4.6 patch 518 and prior who have been exploited when CVE-2024-9379, CVE-2024-9380 or CVE-2024-9381 are chained with CVE-2024-8963," the company said . There is no evidence of exploitation against customer environments running CSA 5.0. A brief description of the three shortcomings is as follows - CVE-2024-9379 (CVSS score: 6.5) - SQL injection in the admin web console of Ivanti CSA before version 5.0.2 allo

Cloudflare Thwarts Largest-Ever 3.8 Tbps DDoS Attack Targeting Global Sectors

Oct 04, 2024 DDoS Attack / Botnet
Cloudflare has disclosed that it mitigated a record-breaking distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack that peaked at 3.8 terabits per second (Tbps) and lasted 65 seconds. The web infrastructure and security company said it fended off "over one hundred hyper-volumetric L3/4 DDoS attacks throughout last month, with many exceeding 2 billion packets per second (Bpps) and 3 terabits per second (Tbps)." The hyper-volumetric L3/4 DDoS attacks have been ongoing since early September 2024, it noted, adding they targeted multiple customers in the financial services, Internet, and telecommunication industries. The activity has not been attributed to any specific threat actor. The previous record for the largest volumetric DDoS attack hit a peak throughput of 3.47 Tbps in November 2021 , targeting an unnamed Microsoft Azure customer in Asia. The attacks leverage the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) protocol on a fixed port, with the flood of packets originating from Vietnam, Russi

The Secret Weakness Execs Are Overlooking: Non-Human Identities

Oct 03, 2024Enterprise Security / Cloud Security
For years, securing a company's systems was synonymous with securing its "perimeter." There was what was safe "inside" and the unsafe outside world. We built sturdy firewalls and deployed sophisticated detection systems, confident that keeping the barbarians outside the walls kept our data and systems safe. The problem is that we no longer operate within the confines of physical on-prem installations and controlled networks. Data and applications now reside in distributed cloud environments and data centers, accessed by users and devices connecting from anywhere on the planet. The walls have crumbled, and the perimeter has dissolved, opening the door to a new battlefield: identity . Identity is at the center of what the industry has praised as the new gold standard of enterprise security: "zero trust." In this paradigm, explicit trust becomes mandatory for any interactions between systems, and no implicit trust shall subsist. Every access request, regardless of its origin,

Google Adds New Pixel Security Features to Block 2G Exploits and Baseband Attacks

Oct 03, 2024 Mobile Security / Technology
Google has revealed the various security guardrails that have been incorporated into its latest Pixel devices to counter the rising threat posed by baseband security attacks. The cellular baseband (i.e., modem) refers to a processor on the device that's responsible for handling all connectivity, such as LTE, 4G, and 5G, with a mobile phone cell tower or base station over a radio interface. "This function inherently involves processing external inputs, which may originate from untrusted sources," Sherk Chung and Stephan Chen from the Pixel team, and Roger Piqueras Jover and Ivan Lozano from the company's Android team said in a blog post shared with The Hacker News. "For instance, malicious actors can employ false base stations to inject fabricated or manipulated network packets. In certain protocols like IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem), this can be executed remotely from any global location using an IMS client." What's more, the firmware powering the

Ivanti Endpoint Manager Flaw Actively Targeted, CISA Warns Agencies to Patch

Oct 03, 2024 Vulnerability / Endpoint Security
The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) on Wednesday added a security flaw impacting Ivanti Endpoint Manager (EPM) that the company patched in May to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities ( KEV ) catalog, based on evidence of active exploitation. The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2024-29824 , carries a CVSS score of 9.6 out of a maximum of 10.0, indicating critical severity. "An unspecified SQL Injection vulnerability in Core server of Ivanti EPM 2022 SU5 and prior allows an unauthenticated attacker within the same network to execute arbitrary code," the software service provider said in an advisory released on May 21, 2024. Horizon3.ai, which released a proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit for the flaw in June, said the issue is rooted in a function called RecordGoodApp() within a DLL named PatchBiz.dll. Specifically, it concerns how the function handles an SQL query statement, thereby allowing an attacker to gain remote code execution via xp_cmdshe

Alert: Over 700,000 DrayTek Routers Exposed to Hacking via 14 New Vulnerabilities

Oct 02, 2024 Vulnerability / Network Security
A little over a dozen new security vulnerabilities have been discovered in residential and enterprise routers manufactured by DrayTek that could be exploited to take over susceptible devices. "These vulnerabilities could enable attackers to take control of a router by injecting malicious code, allowing them to persist on the device and use it as a gateway into enterprise networks," Forescout Vedere Labs said in a technical report shared with The Hacker News. Of the 14 security flaws – collectively called DRAY:BREAK – two are rated critical, nine are rated high, and three are rated medium in severity. The most critical of the shortcomings is a flaw that has been awarded the maximum CVSS score of 10.0. CVE-2024-41592 concerns a buffer overflow bug in the "GetCGI()" function in the Web user interface that could lead to a denial-of-service (DoS) or remote code execution (RCE) when processing the query string parameters. Another critical vulnerability (CVE-2024-41

5 Must-Have Tools for Effective Dynamic Malware Analysis

Oct 02, 2024 Malware Analysis / Threat Detection
Dynamic malware analysis is a key part of any threat investigation. It involves executing a sample of a malicious program in the isolated environment of a malware sandbox to monitor its behavior and gather actionable indicators. Effective analysis must be fast, in-depth, and precise. These five tools will help you achieve it with ease. 1. Interactivity Having the ability to interact with the malware and the system in real-time is a great advantage when it comes to dynamic analysis. This way, you can not only observe its execution but also see how it responds to your inputs and triggers specific behaviors.  Plus, it saves time by allowing you to download samples hosted on file-sharing websites or open those packed inside an archive, which is a common way to deliver payloads to victims. The initial phishing email containing the malicious pdf and password for the archive Check out this sandbox session in the ANY.RUN sandbox that shows how interactivity is used for analyzing the en

Researchers Warn of Ongoing Attacks Exploiting Critical Zimbra Postjournal Flaw

Oct 02, 2024 Email Security / Vulnerability
Cybersecurity researchers are warning about active exploitation attempts targeting a newly disclosed security flaw in Synacor's Zimbra Collaboration. Enterprise security firm Proofpoint said it began observing the activity starting September 28, 2024. The attacks seek to exploit CVE-2024-45519 , a severe security flaw in Zimbra's postjournal service that could enable unauthenticated attackers to execute arbitrary commands on affected installations. "The emails spoofing Gmail were sent to bogus addresses in the CC fields in an attempt for Zimbra servers to parse and execute them as commands," Proofpoint said in a series of posts on X. "The addresses contained Base64 strings that are executed with the sh utility." The critical issue was addressed by Zimbra in versions 8.8.15 Patch 46, 9.0.0 Patch 41, 10.0.9, and 10.1.1 released on September 4, 2024. A security researcher named lebr0nli (Alan Li) has been credited with discovering and reporting the short
Critical Flaws in Tank Gauge Systems Expose Gas Stations to Remote Attacks

Critical Flaws in Tank Gauge Systems Expose Gas Stations to Remote Attacks

Sep 30, 2024 Operational Technology / Network Security
Critical security vulnerabilities have been disclosed in six different Automatic Tank Gauge (ATG) systems from five manufacturers that could expose them to remote attacks. "These vulnerabilities pose significant real-world risks, as they could be exploited by malicious actors to cause widespread damage, including physical damage, environmental hazards, and economic losses," Bitsight researcher Pedro Umbelino said in a report published last week. Making matters worse, the analysis found that thousands of ATGs are exposed to the internet, making them a lucrative target for malicious actors looking to stage disruptive and destructive attacks against gas stations, hospitals, airports, military bases, and other critical infrastructure facilities. ATGs are sensor systems designed to monitor the level of a storage tank (e.g., fuel tank) over a period of time with the goal of determining leakage and parameters. Exploitation of security flaws in such systems could therefore have

Critical Linux CUPS Printing System Flaws Could Allow Remote Command Execution

Sep 27, 2024 Linux / Vulnerability
A new set of security vulnerabilities has been disclosed in the OpenPrinting Common Unix Printing System ( CUPS ) on Linux systems that could permit remote command execution under certain conditions. "A remote unauthenticated attacker can silently replace existing printers' (or install new ones) IPP urls with a malicious one, resulting in arbitrary command execution (on the computer) when a print job is started (from that computer)," security researcher Simone Margaritelli said . CUPS is a standards-based, open-source printing system for Linux and other Unix-like operating systems, including ArchLinux, Debian, Fedora, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), ChromeOS, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, openSUSE, and SUSE Linux. The list of vulnerabilities is as follows - CVE-2024-47176 - cups-browsed <= 2.0.1 binds on UDP INADDR_ANY:631 trusting any packet from any source to trigger a Get-Printer-Attributes IPP request to an attacker-controlled URL CVE-2024-47076 - libcupsfil

Chinese Hackers Infiltrate U.S. Internet Providers in Cyber Espionage Campaign

Sep 26, 2024 Cyber Espionage / Hacking
Nation-state threat actors backed by Beijing broke into a "handful" of U.S. internet service providers (ISPs) as part of a cyber espionage campaign orchestrated to glean sensitive information, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday. The activity has been attributed to a threat actor that Microsoft tracks as Salt Typhoon, which is also known as FamousSparrow and GhostEmperor. "Investigators are exploring whether the intruders gained access to Cisco Systems routers, core network components that route much of the traffic on the internet," the publication was quoted as saying, citing people familiar with the matter. The end goal of the attacks is to gain a persistent foothold within target networks, allowing the threat actors to harvest sensitive data or launch a damaging cyber attack. GhostEmperor first came to light in October 2021, when Russian cybersecurity company Kasperksy detailed a long-standing evasive operation targeting Southeast Asian targets in

Expert Tips on How to Spot a Phishing Link

Sep 25, 2024 Cyber Awareness / Threat Detection
Phishing attacks are becoming more advanced and harder to detect, but there are still telltale signs that can help you spot them before it's too late. See these key indicators that security experts use to identify phishing links: 1. Check Suspicious URLs  Phishing URLs are often long, confusing, or filled with random characters. Attackers use these to disguise the link's true destination and mislead users.  The first step in protecting yourself is to inspect the URL carefully. Always ensure it begins with "HTTPS," as the "s" indicates a secure connection using an SSL certificate.  However, keep in mind that SSL certificates alone are not enough. Cyber attackers have increasingly used legitimate-looking HTTPS links to distribute malicious content. This is why you should be suspicious of links that are overly complex or look like a jumble of characters.  Tools like ANY.RUN's Safebrowsing allow users to check suspicious links in a secure and isolated environment w
